The Spiš diocese is part of the eastern ecclesiastical province and, together with the Rožňava diocese, is a sufragan of the Košice archbishopric.
The Spiš diocese was established by separation from the Esztergom archbishopric on March 13, 1776. Pope Pius VI. so did the bull Romanus pontifex, which he issued on the basis of a decree of Maria Theresa from the beginning of 1776. Along with the Spiš diocese, the Banská Bystrica and Rožňava dioceses were established.
The seat of the Spiš diocese became the Spiš Chapter, whose history probably dates back to the 12th century, although the first written mention of Spiš is a document of the Hungarian King Andrew II. from 1209. Through it, Bishop Ekbert of Bamberg (brother of the Hungarian Queen Gertrude, the first wife of Andrew II) sells a large area between the Snow Mountains and in the Poprad river basin to the Spiš post office Adolf and his sister. It is probable that the post office's sister, her husband Rutger and Adolf himself (the first post office known in Spiš) came from a close circle of Queen Gertrude. Thus, this document acquaints us with the existence of the committee and also with the existence of the church organization Spiš, which was represented by the Spiš post office and its post office. Despite the fact that no document has been preserved that would acquaint us with the exact date of the founding of the Spiš post office, the mentioned document confirms to us that in 1209 the post office already existed. In addition, in Pažice (as opposed to today's bishop's residence) probably already in the 11th century there was a Benedictine monastery dedicated to St. Martin.
