The lake, a significant element in the composition of the garden, creates conditions for the natural development of duck communities, as well as other wild species of individuals, protects and maintains their habitat.
Our Zoo was founded in May 1989. Its first director, Karol Dzurik st .. The city park was renovated and gradually various species of animals were added to it. In October 1989, the ZOO obtained an authorization from the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic to breed protected species of animals.
From 1.1.2000 it became a contributory organization of the town of Spišská Nová Ves. We are members of UCSZ (Union of Czech and Slovak ZOO). We are included in 4 European breeding programs.
The 6.5 ha zoo has expanded by 1.5 ha. On this extended part we built a breeding facility for brown emu, alpaca llamas, marsh capybaras, lynx and marsh cats.
A novelty since 2008 has been the construction of a new breeding facility for the Ussuri tiger and a reconstructed breeding facility for porcupines.
This year, visitors were certainly surprised by the renovated car park and a large part of the sidewalks. The monkey enclosure was also modernized and a new playground was built.
The diversity of woody plants found here enabled the creation of an arboretum. More than 30 species of wood are specified.
A new breeding facility for white-handed gibbons and a new aviary for rock otters were built.
We expanded the enclosure with red noses and set up premises for the Pohoda confectionery.
We built a new aviary for black ravens and a paddock for red-necked kangaroos, we built a new ZOO shop and Aquaterra pavilion.
We have expanded the outdoor breeding facility for the American jaguar and the spotted leopard. We built a paddock with a wooden shelter for Hortobágy crayfish.
A new breeding facility for pink flamingos was created.
We built a new breeding facility for brown bears, which is 5 times larger than the original. We built a new bow with four boxes for ungulates. In the ZOO, we have installed direction signs and maps for better orientation. From 20 to 22 May, the General Meeting of UCSZOO was held for the first time in our ZOO. 4.6. we welcomed 140 participants of the EARAZA conference in our ZOO.
We built a bridge over the lake, which connected the ZOO complex with the Aquaterra pavilion. The bridge crosses the island, which is divided into two parts: one is used by waterfowl for nesting, the other has found the home of the ring-tailed lemur. We have created a new breeding facility for steppe mary. At the Aquaterra pavilion, we created a paddock for meerkats, which is connected to the dormitory by an underground corridor. Not only the meerkats enjoyed it, but also the visitors, who can now watch them on the terrace by the patisserie. We have opened a new toilet for handicapped visitors, where there is also a changing table for the youngest visitors.
An outdoor breeding facility for clawed monkeys was created at the Aquaterra pavilion. The tame llamas have gained a new big enclosure. This year, visitors could also notice the renovated entrance to the ZOO and new external fitness machines for all ages.
For a better experience of cultural and educational events at the ZOO, we have built a stage, which includes a cloakroom for performers.
This year we roofed the stage and built an auditorium for the spectators, thus creating an amphitheater. Due to increasing traffic, we built a third parking lot. We built a new breeding facility for the brown emu, an aviary for the macaws, and reconstructed the monkey enclosure.
At present, the number of animals is around 500 and 130 species. Among the most attractive are animals registered in the so-called The Red Book of Endangered Animals - Bornean Orangutan or Ussuri Tiger. Other interesting alien animals are the biped camel, the motley mandrill, the alpaca llama, the tame llama, the red nosed plover, the American cougar, the white-handed gibbon, the kata lemur, the squirrel beetle and others. From domestic fauna we breed brown bear, lynx, swan and others. In the past, we have managed to breed young brown bears, alpaca llamas, red-necked kangaroos, Ussuri tigers, biped camels, white-tailed porcupines and others. Even the smallest visitors will enjoy themselves here, because our Zoo is diversified by two children's playgrounds. During the summer season, they can jump on an inflatable giraffe or enjoy other attractions, e.g. horseback riding, boating, amusement machine. In the area of the ZOO there are also stalls with refreshments, with ice cream and a stand with souvenirs, confectionery Pohoda, Zooshop. A novelty of 2020 is the MONKEYLAND rope park.
