The foundations of the collection come from the Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves, from which the collection was set aside and started by delimiting 520 works of art, which already included the works of Spiš artists. During the thirty years of the gallery's activity, the collection has more than tripled, today it consists of 2364 pieces of art artifacts from the fields of painting, drawing, graphics, illustration, photography, sculpture and intermediate works.
The profile of the gallery is based on the relevant founding document, defining its scope in the field of professional fine arts with a priority orientation on the art of the Spiš region. In the last decade, the gallery's activities have expanded from the regional to the wider national and European space. The gallery currently has program-developed cultural and educational activities focused on communication with the visitor. Their intention is to address and engage various target groups from preschool children through students of different types of schools and young people in educational and various interactive projects.
Works of art from the collection are presented in three permanent exhibitions. Already in the first year of the gallery's existence, an exhibition called Artists of Spiš was opened, which mapped a number of regional artists who significantly contributed to the development of art in Spiš. In 2012, the exhibition was replaced by a new permanent exhibition Terra Gothica - a Gothic journey from the gallery's collections presenting a collection with a Gothic preference. In 1994, a separate exhibition dedicated to the work of an important representative of Slovak fine art, Jozef Hanulu, who lived and worked in Spišská Nová Ves, was installed. Re-installation of the permanent exhibition with a new concept and selection from the collection and documentation fund took place at the end of 2013. Since 2002, an exhibition of sculptural works Garden of Art has been built, in which works from sculpture symposia are presented.
