The Hrádek Arboretum was founded on the current site by the director of the forestry school in Liptovský Hrádok, Rudolf Benkö, in 1886. The arboretum is still managed by the Secondary School of Forestry and Woodworking JD Matejovie in Liptovský Hrádok and performs mainly educational tasks. The arboretum is located in the cadastral area of Liptovský Hrádok. It is at the interface of a climatic area of moderately warm, sub-area humid, perimeter of moderately warm, humid valley with cold or cold winter. It covers an area of only 7.03 ha. The average annual temperature in the arboretum is 8.1 ° C and the average precipitation is 734.7 mm per year. The maximum temperature was recorded on August 7, 2013 at the level of 36.6 ° C. The minimum temperature was recorded on 11.2.1929 at the level of -38.0 ° C. The duration of sunshine was recorded at 1535 hours per year. The average duration of snow cover is 77 days. The average number of frosty days is 69. The average number of summer days is 19. The average temperature in the growing season is 14.3 ° C.
The Hrádek Arboretum is the highest arboretum in Europe. Its altitude is 646 meters above sea level
It is one of the oldest arboretums in Slovakia. The first establishment of the arboretum near the forestry school dates back to 1796. Construction began on the current site in 1886.
The Hrádek Arboretum has been a protected study area since 1 December 1982, serving as a living dendrology cabinet for students and employees of the forestry and woodworking school, researchers from various institutions as well as for citizens of Liptovský Hrádok and visitors from all over the world.
The Hrádok Arboretum is in accordance with the Act of the National Council of the Slovak Republic no. 49/2012 on the protection of the monument fund, as amended, declared on March 23, 1963 as a cultural monument.
The Hrádok Arboretum is in accordance with the Act of the National Council of the Slovak Republic no. 543/2002 Coll. On nature and landscape protection, as amended, also declared a protected area since 1982. The 4th level of nature protection applies to the entire area, in which various prohibitions and regulations apply in accordance with the law.
Hrádek Arboretum was 12.10. 2009 under the responsibility of Lesov SR š.p. Banská Bystrica declared an important forest place.
The Hrádek Arboretum of the Jozef Dekret Matejovie Secondary School of Forestry and Wood Technology in Liptovský Hrádok became a member of the Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboretum of Slovakia in 2015 and thus achieved representation in the world organization BGCI-Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
The Hrádek Arboretum is a member of the INDEX SEMINUM group. It is a group of arboretums and botanical gardens, which exchange seeds of domestic and foreign trees for their further cultivation.
