Synagogue - Liptovský Mikuláš

One of the largest and most stylish in Slovakia stands out with its richly decorated Art Nouveau interior. "At the beginning of the 19th century, Liptovský Mikuláš was given the adjective Jewish Athens or a city full of sages and scholars of the Scriptures."

The synagogue, built in 1842-46, acquired its current appearance after reconstruction in 1906, when the famous Budapest architect Leopold Baumhorn connected the original classicist exterior with the Art Nouveau interior. The magnificent interior is dominated by blue-gold stucco decoration, a large colored stained glass ceiling with a motif of the sun and flowers against a blue sky, and the building "Aron-ha-Kodeš, where the Torah was preserved, composed as an imposing gate. An exhibition on the history of the Jewish community has been installed in the western gallery of the synagogue, which has co-created the history of the city for more than two centuries. The first Jewish families came here around 1720 at the invitation of the nobleman Pongrác, who had promised economic development since their work. His expectations were met as the Jews were great merchants. They traded mainly in wood, leather, textiles, spirits and tobacco. However, among them were excellent teachers, doctors and lawyers. Even the great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England grew up in the family of the Jewish teacher Rubin Schwalb. You can hear her fascinating life story and the stories of other Jews from St. Nicholas when you book a guided city tour at the Information Center. The history of this exceptional community came to an end during World War II, when 885 Jews were gradually deported from March 1942. Only a fraction of them managed to survive. A memorial plaque on the front of the synagogue also commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. A copy of the famous relief by the St. Nicholas painter Michal Kernas can also be found in the National Memorial to the Victims of the Holocaust in Jerusalem, others are located in six other Slovak synagogues. At present, the consecrated synagogue is a museum exposition and many cultural events take place in its space. The most famous are Mosty Gesharim, which are regularly broadcast by Slovak Television.
