East Slovak Gallery

When the East Slovak Gallery was opened to the public for the first time, this event represented an important milestone for Slovak culture. Two years after the opening of the Slovak National Gallery, the first regional gallery was established in 1951 in the second largest city in Slovakia. Since its inception, the gallery has undergone many changes, and a lot of quality art has been added to the collections.

Our task is to continue to collect, make accessible, protect and, last but not least, spread awareness of Slovak and foreign fine arts and share it in all its complexity and diversity.

The establishment of our gallery and the building in which the gallery is located, the building of the former county house, are closely connected with the city of Košice, the East Slovakian region and its rich history, which is accompanied by cultural and national understanding. Our commitment is not only to work with the visual arts, but also to point out current burning issues, such as the climate crisis, social inequality, segregation, hatred of otherness. We care about the environment and follow the Green Code. We have set ourselves the goal of becoming an inclusive institution that reflects the world in which we live. In addition to collecting, researching, documenting and presenting fine art, we have reopened a library with a specialized library collection for our visitors and researchers. We have transformed the entrance hall into a modern place of first contact. In addition, we have set up the independent space Extinction of the Planet, where events focusing on the city, urbanism, ecology, climate, and other current topics are organized.

We build on the hard work of our predecessors with the energy of a new generation of curators, gallery teachers, professional staff thinking of art as a catalyst for current and future ideas. The exhibition projects we offer are diverse and vary from old to contemporary art. Our non-exhibition department prepares a rich program for professionals and the general public from the youngest to seniors. Our team is working to create a professional documentation center. The conditions for storing works in the depository are improving. We are constantly striving to bring quality solutions and new approaches, and we address renowned architects, artists and scientists for cooperation.
