St. Elisabeth Cathedral

The oldest church in Košice was probably built around the middle of the 11th century and was dedicated to St. Michael. It was exhibited on the site of the current Dome in the Romanesque style. Already as a parish church, it is mentioned by the oldest written mention of the city from 1230.

After the settlement of German guests in Košice in the 1940s, when St. Elizabeth became the patron saint of the city, the original patronage of the parish church was changed and it was dedicated to St. Elizabeth. On this occasion, the church was renovated in the second half of the 13th century in the Gothic style. The church has preserved the Romanesque tower, but received a Gothic vault and the closure of the sanctuary. Charter of Pope Martin IV. from 1283, the church is already dedicated to St. Elizabeth. [2] The foundations of this Romanesque-Gothic church were found during the great reconstruction of the Dome in the years 1882 - 1884. 8 × 14 m, the whole area had an area of 520 m². This parish church burned down around 1380, but was renovated and maintained in operation until the construction of the current Cathedral. To this day, several Romanesque artifacts have been preserved, such as a statue of a lion, a bronze baptistery and several tombstones.
