Dunajské Luhy

The Danube Meadow Protected Landscape Area with a rich occurrence of water birds is one of the youngest large-scale protected areas in Slovakia.

The Danube Meadows Protected Landscape Area is located in the southern part of Žitný ostrov, adjacent to the old Danube riverbed. The protection of rare floodplain forests around the Danube River has been taken care of by the staff of the Protected Landscape Area Administration on an area of 12,285 ha since 1998. The Danube Meadows Protected Landscape Area also represents an important habitat for water birds. Rare bird species are regularly found here, such as the white-tailed eagle, the white-tailed deer and the purple heron. Therefore, it is included among the internationally important bird areas of the IBA.
