Juraj Holček (1811 – 1869), Catholic priest, national revivalist, devoted himself to school and pedagogical problems and popular education activities.

Juraj Holček was born in Pudmerice in the then Bratislava county (currently Budmerice, Pezinok district) on April 5, 1811 as the son of a miller.

He attended elementary school in Budmericie between 1817 and 1823, which he later generously supported. He studied Normalka in Modra, grammar in Bratislava and Trnava, rhetoric in Komárno, poetry and logic in Trnava, physics in Szeged and theology in Trnava.

Initially, they did not want to accept him for priestly studies at the seminary in Trnava, which is why he started studying in Szeged, which indicates that he wanted to become a professor. High school professors were primarily from the Piarist order. However, the girl left her for unknown reasons and returned to Slovakia. It is believed to have been for incipient cholera. He enrolled as an extern at the theology in Trnava, where he was accepted without any problems and immediately enrolled in the fourth year.

He made literary contributions to the following magazines: Slovenské národné noviny, Cyrill a Method, Katolícke noviny, Obzor, Pesthbudínske vedomosti, Friend of the school and literature, Sion, Slovenské noviny, Orol Tatranský.

After his ordination as a priest on September 30, 1835, he became an administrator in the Kostolec parish near Ostrihom, which became Holček's first place of work, where he represented the parish priest after his death. In December 1835, he became chaplain at the parish in Majcichov near Trnava. The administrator of the parish was Ignác Alkus. Later, Ján Palárik worked as a parish priest in Majcichov, with whom Holček collaborated in publishing the Cyrill and Method magazine and Katolíckych noviny.

At the end of January 1836, he joined Jablonice as an administrator, where he remained until the death of its principal, Jozef Bélik, on January 10, 1837. As Jablonice's administrator, he began to build a school, which at that time was considered almost the first in this region, and he also acts as a co-founder of the music respiratory association.

Later, he was transferred to Nádaš (currently Trstín) to the well-known nationalist Imrich Štvrtecký, to whom the poet Ján Hollý dedicated two odes. He worked here for six and a half years as a chaplain. He founded an association similar to the one in Jablonica in Nádaš, where he also focused on educating the youth and looking for new Slovak talents. He was also impressed by the so-called Pink celebration, organized by the municipality, the essence of which was to protect the virginity of unmarried girls. The most honest virgin was then rewarded with a wreath of roses and a financial reward. Holček spoke in Orle Tatrański about the moral mission of the Pink Festival. Even the Prague magazine Květy reported on the Pink Festival, which pursued moral and educational goals.

In October 1843, as a 32-year-old Holček was appointed parish priest in the parish of Veselé pri Piešťany (1843 – 1848), the birthplace of Štefan Moyzes. He was ceremoniously introduced to this parish by Dean Martin Lackovič, with whom the ailing Ján Hollý was already living in Dobra Voda at that time. Juraj Holček found support especially from Baron Alojz Medňanský. He lived in Vesel with his parents, who also celebrated their golden wedding here. In 1847, his sixty-nine-year-old mother died here.

From Veselé, Juraj Holček moved to the parish of Starý Háj (currently Dolný Ohaj), where he served as parish priest in the years 1848 – 1865. The Hul branch belonged to it. On April 19, 1851, Holček's father died in this parish at the age of 78.

He ended his pastoral activity in Jasová on May 4, 1869.
