Blood donors are still welcome, patients need blood even during a pandemic

Due to the emergency situation caused by the new coronavirus COVID-19, there has been a significant decrease in blood donors in the workplaces of the national transfusion service, which is reflected in reduced stocks of blood products. Despite the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, there are acute patients in hospitals in the Slovak Republic who still need blood for their treatment. Blood cannot be produced by any chemical process, they can only get it from us - from voluntary blood donors.

We therefore call on people not to be afraid, to come to donate blood and thus help save lives. We assure blood donors that stricter hygienic conditions and preventive measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus have been introduced in all workplaces of the National Transfusion Service of the Slovak Republic. Donors may enter the workplace only with a protective mask on their face or its replacement, after disinfecting the hands, measuring body temperature and filling in the Checklist.

During this period, a person who:
- has not been abroad for the last 14 days,
- has not been in contact during the last 14 days with a person who has returned from abroad, is quarantined or has had symptoms of respiratory disease or COVID-19,
- has or has not had any of the following symptoms of respiratory disease in the last 14 days: dry cough, shortness of breath, fever, chills, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, diarrhea or vomiting.

The donor verified in this way proceeds to the workplace and undergoes a standard blood donation process consisting of filling in the Blood Donor Questionnaire, pre-collection examination, examination by a doctor and subsequent blood donation. Due to health protection, every blood donor has the opportunity to order a donation on time. With this measure, we try to minimize the large concentration of people in the space.
It is possible to donate blood from Monday to Friday during the collection hours, which are from 7.00 am to 2.00 pm, except on Tuesdays, when it is possible to donate blood from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.
