The distinctive village of Závadka nad Hronom is located on the southern slopes of the Low Tatras and on the northern edge of the Slovak Ore Mountains and Muránská planina.

The oldest known written mention of the village is from 1611. It was established on the site of the defunct settlement of Veľký Potok. It was founded in the 16th century on Wallachian law and belonged to the Gemer capital. This meant that the Wallachians were for a time exempted from serfors, tithing and robots. In return, they had to guard the roads and perform military service. They handed over their twenties to their landowner for the free use of pasture, bryndza, sheep cheese and similar products. In the middle of the village, a late Baroque Church of St. Ján Nepomucký from 1784, which is included among the cultural monuments.
