ŠAŠTÍN is one of the oldest villages in Slovakia. The first mention of its existence comes from 1218 under the name Saswar. Even at that time, Šaštín was the seat of an archdeacon. The village was the property of Stibor and from the end of the 15th century belonged to the Czoborovs. The establishment of a pilgrimage site in Šaštín is also connected with this period.
