The exchange of population between Czechoslovakia and Hungary was a post-war mutual migration of the population on the basis of mutual agreement between the two countries. The primary intention of the Czech-Slovak representatives was to displace as many Hungarians as possible and to build the nation-state of Czechs and Slovaks without non-Slavic minorities. After Czech-Slovak diplomacy failed to enforce the unilateral displacement of the Hungarians following the example of the German minority, mutual exchange was to be the optimal solution. Negotiations for the exchange began in December 1945 and the agreement was signed in February 1946. By the end of 1948, before, during and after the validity of the agreement, 89,660 Hungarians from Slovakia and approximately 72,000 Slovaks from Hungary emigrated within and outside it. The agreement and the exchange itself were perceived controversially, especially due to the different conditions in both contracting countries
