The Mining Museum in Gelnica was originally an external facility of the Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves, and currently belongs to the administration of the Gelnica Municipal Office. The tradition of collecting documentary material related to mining in Gelnica dates back to the reign of Maria Theresa. Today's mining museum was established in 1963 and is housed in the building of the former town hall. The collections in the museum come mainly from the Gelnica area and relate to the 19th and 20th centuries.
