The village of Úľany nad Žitavou

A small village in the valley of the rivers Nitra and Zittau, boasting one of the largest numbers of beehives per capita. The seat of a small winery with exceptional wines among the best in the world. Home of a skilled artistic carver turning pieces of wood into artistic gems. Farm room as proof that the inhabitants of the village care about returning to folklore and traditions, which are an integral part of their rich history. This is also the village of Úľany nad Žitavou.

In the past, Úľany nad Žitavou was an important railway and road junction of Požitavia. In the first official record from 1284, they are mentioned as Fedemus, during the Hungarianization in the 18th century. Födémes, Zsitvafödémes or even Fedýmeš nad Žitavou. It was not until 1948 that the official name Úľany nad Žitavou was established. The dominant and most important architectural monument of the village is the late Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin, Bishop of Tours. It was built by Count Anton Károlyi and his wife Jozef in the years 1781 - 1784. The piety of the people of Úľany is evidenced by many crosses and other monuments in the area: the white cross, the red cross, the statue of St. Anny, Sv. Trinity, St. Florian, the guardian angel, Christ of pain, St. J. Nepomuckého and pieta. The importance of the Úľany settlement was greatly influenced by the reign of Maria Theresa, especially her social and economic reforms. After 1740, the services of stagecoaches, which operated on the castle roads, developed in Úľany. The spill station disappeared only in the middle of the 19th century after the occupation of the building by the army. Half a century later, however, the railway was already operating here. In the coat of arms of the village there is a beehive on a green hill between ears of grain and black bee. Hence the current name Úľany. The village has been associated with bees and beekeeping for a long time.

There are even well-known local legends from the period of the Turkish invasions, in which the alert inhabitants swarmed the bees from the hives and used them to drive the Turks out of the village. Ulan bees are really hardworking. One beehive can produce up to 30 kg of honey per year, which with a number of about 500 beehives in the village means an annual production of up to 15 tons of honey. If one can appreciate exceptional wines, one has a chance in Úľany. In addition to beekeepers, the village was also made famous by its winemakers Jozef Teplan and Tomáš Strelinger. The Žitavské vinice brand also gained a foothold abroad, winning leading places and medals in competitions in Vienna and Paris, and in 2014 it was rightly ranked among the 30 best wine producers from all over the world. Another talented winemaker is Peter Malík, who has all available white varieties from white wines in this area. The various cultural and sports activities of the municipality and its associations are sympathetic. Every year, for example, during the fruit and vegetable exhibition, the most beautiful apple and pear of the village are evaluated. Every year in the Fedýmeš cauldron, they compete in cooking goulash or in air rifle shooting at the Fedýmešská diabolka. In November, gardeners and winemakers, not only from Úľany, but also from the surrounding area, bless young wines.

Folklore traditions are also presented by Úľančany to visitors to the village in a farm's room. It was established only recently and documents important stages of history, a demonstration of the costume or typical dining.
But let's not forget one more interesting thing. The local football club ŠK Fedýmeš was founded in 1926. Its century will certainly be celebrated in Úľany as it should be.
