Danube Museum in Komárno

In 1886, the Historical and Archaeological Association of Komárno County and the City of Komárno was founded. The collection of this association formed the basis of a later museum. In 1900, the association was renamed the Museum Association of Komárno County and the City of Komárno. Instead of the existing collection of antiques, the Museum Association has created four departments: historical, archeological, natural history and ethnography.

An important milestone in the life of the museum was the year 1911, when the Jókai Educational and Museum Association was formed by merging the Museum Association with the Educational Association and the County Library. In 1913, based on the projects of the Budapest University. prof. Dezső Hültla built a new purpose-built building of the Jókai Association - the Cultural Palace, today's seat of the museum. In the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic, the Jókai Association became a national cultural association and the activities of the museum in its program gave way to the background.

After the Second World War, a new stage in the life of the museum began. In 1948, the District Museum was founded, which in 1949 was named the Danube Museum. The institution's activities were hampered by a lack of professional staff and premises. This situation improved only after 1968, when after the overhaul of the museum building, a permanent archaeological, historical and ethnographic exhibition was opened in 1970. In the 1970s, the number of professional staff increased, systematic scientific research activities began, and the results of this activity were published in professional journals and in the daily press, as well as in the museum's publications. Since 1979, the institution has published its newsletter, which includes studies of its staff and reports on the museum's activities. Since 1975, the museum has also set up exhibitions in rented premises outside its main building and has held several temporary exhibitions on a regular basis each year. The new statute of the museum from 1991 enabled the expansion of the collection and scientific research activities of the institution to the whole territory of Slovakia, also inhabited by citizens of Hungarian nationality. To coordinate this activity, the Hungarian National Department of the museum was established. In 2002, the museum came under the administration of the Nitra self-governing region and its name was changed to the Museum of Hungarian Culture and the Danube Region in Komárno. In January 2008, the institution was renamed the Danube Museum in Komárno. At present, its basic mission is, on the basis of research and scientific research, to purposefully collect, scientifically evaluate, professionally manage and protect, scientifically and culturally and educationally use tangible and intangible documents on the development and current state of society in the Komárno district, as well as on development of nature in the southern part of the Danubian Lowland in the districts of Komárno and Nové Zámky. As part of its specialization, the museum focuses on the history, ethnography and cultural history of the Hungarian national minority, research and documentation of interethnic relations in the Nitra self-governing region, as well as research and documentation of Roman monuments in the Komárno district.
