The village and its surroundings literally abounded in an abundance of mud. Its name is derived from the ancient Slavic name "bolto", or "boloto", from which the name of the village Blatné, Blatná or Blatnica probably originated. After the establishment of the Hungarian state, the Hungarians took over the name, Hungarianized it and the village bore such a name until 1948. In history, it is known by various names. Until 1913 it is mentioned as Sarfy, Sarfew, Saarfo, Ssárfia, Pozsonysárfo, until 1948 as Šarfia. Since 1948 it has been called Blatné.
