In the city there are several important archaeological sites, mostly from the Late Bronze Age (people of the Lusatian ash fields). Evidence of the stay of the Slavic inhabitants is known from the 9th century AD. Trniny was already a fortified stronghold in the Great Moravian period.

The origin of the name Kubín is derived by the linguist Rudolf Krajčovič from the designation of the area, which is shrouded in smoke towes at the time of burning the roots and unnecessary wood at the key house of the log house; in the Middle Ages, the historical name Klubín originated from the historical name Kubín with indicative attributes according to the location of Nižný and Vyšný, later Dolný and Vyšný. The reality of the interpretation is confirmed by the name of the nearby village of Poruba (forest cutting, cutting site).

Kubín is first mentioned in 1325 in a document by which the Turčianske convent confirmed the change of property and the acquisition of the settlement of Vyšný Kubín by landowners from Liptovská Revúca. It follows that Dolný Kubín must have existed in this period. A more precise mention of Dolný Kubín dates back to 1381, when a dispute over the border broke out between the inhabitants of Vyšší Kubín and Dolnokubín, belonging to the Orava Castle. In the years 1564 - 1578, Dolný Kubín had only 10–11 settlements, when the houses were registered for the royal tax in In 1598, they counted 34 houses here. The population was permanently tied to land, without the right to free movement. The village was administered by the mayor.

A milestone in the history of Dolný Kubín is the year 1632, when the director of the Orava composesorate, Gašpar Illešházy, for an annual fee of 10 gold coins, freed its inhabitants from performing work duties and promoted them to burghers. Later privileges allowed the town to organize fairs, collect tolls in the Dolnokubín ford and free the inhabitants from paying tolls on land and water.

The city began to change significantly after 1683, when capital general and particular congregations were held here and when it was finally decided that it would be the seat of the capital.
After the fire r. In 1834, the whole of Dolný Kubín was gradually rebuilt. The new subdivision of building plots enabled the construction of town-type houses and the straightforwardness of the square. Dolný Kubín gradually acquired an urban appearance.

In the 19th century, Dolný Kubín became more and more known to Slovaks. Several personalities were born or worked here who interfered in the development of Slovak culture and education and had a significant share in the Slovak national movement (Janko Matúška, Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, Vavrinec Čaplovič, Ladislav Nádaši Jégé, Andrej Radlinský and others). Amateur performances took place in the city and a singer performed there. The city preserved the position of the cultural center of Orava even after 1918.
