City park in Košice

The city park in Košice is the largest park in the city. In the past, during socialism, the name Park gen. Petrova, during Hungary and the Kingdom of Hungary it was called Szechenyi liget and during the first Czechoslovakia it was called Sokolský sad.

The park was founded in the 1960s between Mlynský jark and Hornád (today the railway station and the city center).
At the end of the 18th century, there were town meadows and spas with a source of mineral iron water, which functioned until the end of the 19th century.

The spa was replaced by new steam and bath baths at the Wood Market.
In the 70s of the 20th century, it was slightly reduced in favor of new communication connections, especially in the pre-station area.
The main park promenade, which connects the historic center of Košice with the railway station, was also built in the 60s of the 19th century.
In the park there is also an elegant Swiss-style pavilion, which was built in 1857 for the imperial couple Franz Joseph I (18.8.1830-21.11.1916) and his husband Elizabeth of Bavaria (24.12.1837-10.9.1898), which parents and siblings nicknamed Sissi.

In 1909, the building of the Art Nouveau-style Skating and Tennis Pavilion was built here according to the project of Július Sandy, a native of Prešov, for the Košice Skating and Tennis Association (Kassai korcsolyázó és tenisz egyesület).
In the interwar period, the park housed the Nádražná restaurant, the center of the Slovak Council for Foreign Tourism with a tourist office and accommodation.
In 1937, the Municipal Swimming Pool was established here, and in 1962, an indoor swimming pool was built here according to the plans of the architect Ladislav Greč.
In the 90s of the 20th century, a pond with an artificial stream was established here and a music pavilion was restored, which was built in 1885 according to the plan of the city builder Július Poschl.

The iron construction was made by the artistic blacksmith Master Kozzig.
The last reconstruction and revitalization within the European Capital of Culture project took place in 2013.
During this reconstruction of the park, new lamps, a workout playground, a cable car, cameras, playgrounds, information kiosks were added, and a historic lake by the swimming pool, a gazebo, fountains, bridges and other buildings were renovated.
The historic lake has an area of 650 square meters and its maximum depth is 3.6 meters.
The building of the former Skating and Tennis Pavilion also underwent reconstruction.

At the railway station, in the City Park, there is a majestic and above-150-year-old White Poplar, which is protected by a decision of the Košice Environmental Office, for its scientific-research, educational and cultural-educational significance.
In the second half of the 20th century, monuments were unveiled here - MJR MEMORIAL. ĽUDOVÍT KUKORELLI and MEMORIAL OF GENERAL PETROV.
In the years 2012 to 2015, the reconstruction of the old dilapidated building of the former Košice indoor swimming pool began, which was transformed into the Kunsthalle art hall.
This created a multifunctional space, which is intended for contemporary art, for the organization of international exhibitions and workshops.
Much of the City Park is surrounded by an elegant and wrought-iron fence.
