Construction of the factory began in 1880, and in August 1883, Count Jozef Pálffy's Smolenice Chemical Factory received permission to start production. The technology was imported from Germany, where the experts also came from. The essence of dry distillation consists in the gasification of wood, i.e. the chemical decomposition of wood at a temperature of about 400°C, limited air access, and its subsequent liquefaction into a primary solution of wood alcohol.
