The mountain park was created in the second half of the 19th century during the tenure of the burgher Henrich von Justi, who at that time was the vice-chairman of the Bratislava Beautification Association. It was thanks to him that in 1870 the idea of transforming the forest area called the Student Forest into a Mountain Park began to be implemented. The author of the communications project was city engineer Anton Sendlein.
Realism dominated landscape design, and emphasis began to be placed on the dendrological and botanical qualities of spaces. The species composition of the Mountain Park was extremely rich and is primarily based on the trees of the original forest cover. Since the foundation of the park, however, introduced species have also become an integral part of the stands. A lot of foreign trees were planted here, especially conifers, e.g. Douglas-fir, Norman fir, Japanese larch, ginkgo biloba, Scots pine, black pine, etc.
