The Romathan Theater was established by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic in May 1992 in Košice. He entrusted its management to Anna Koptová (until the end of the 1997/1998 season). Karel Adam has been the director of the theater since the 1998/1999 season. The establishment of the theater was preceded by an initiative of Roma and non-Roma intellectuals with the aim of encouraging the establishment of a professional Roma theater and presenting a proposal for its establishment by A. Koptová, Member of the Slovak National Council, at the last SNR meeting in December 2001.
The first premiere of the Theater was the production of Daniela Hivešová-Šilanová Than perdal o Roma / A Place for the Roma (December 20, 1992). Musically, the first conductor of the theater, Eugen Brindzák st.
