Bratislava's location right in the heart of Europe on the banks of the Danube River predestined the city to become a crossroads and a destination stop for trade routes as well as a center of different cultures. The first traces of permanent settlement are associated with the Late Stone Age. However, the continuous history of the town can only be traced back to the time when the Celtic tribe of Bojov came to Bratislava in the 2nd century BC. They established a strategic power base with a defensive function. They became famous for minting coins, the most famous of which are coins known as the Golden Stater with the inscription Biatek. Thus, Bratislava, like Vienna, Budapest, Paris and other large European cities, stands on the foundations of Celtic settlement.
