From the history of the town of Veľký Šariš
Based on the current state of knowledge, we place the beginnings of settlement of the Middle Saris in the younger section of the Middle Paleolithic. We rely on the obtained stone tools from the Bikoš V. site, which are 60,000 to 80,000 years old. These are the first evidence of the presence of Neanderthal man in the Saris region.
The first written record of Veľký Šariš dates from 1217. Veľký Šariš and Prešov provably existed even before the first written reports at the municipal level, probably with separate parishes. (Košice was founded in 1230, Bardejov 1241, Prešov 1247, Sabinov 1248, Levoča 1249).
In addition to the Torysa River, the crossroads of trade routes connecting the Balkans with the Polish Baltic (Salt Road) and in the direction of the General Assembly, the road connecting Galicia with Spiš, was an important factor in the establishment of the Prešov settlement. Veľký Šariš developed as a typical castle.
