The village of Veľký Slavkov is located in the northwestern part of Spiš on the southern slope of the High Tatras. The surroundings of Veľký Slavkov have been inhabited continuously since the Eneolithic. The archeological site on the island hill Burich reveals that the village once lay further north, closer to the Tatras. The oldest mention of the village, however, comes from 1251, when its inhabitants belonged to the Turčiansky Convention and as Germans settled on the site of the current village.

Slavkov thus became one of the Spiš towns that enjoyed the privileges of the Community of Spiš Saxons from 1271. After the advance of 13 towns of the Community by the Polish king, Slavkov belonged to Province XI. Spišské towns. Around 1465, it became the property of the Zápoľskýs and was one of the eleven towns belonging to the Spiš Castle. In connection with the history and position of the village, it is known that the area of Veľký Slavkov reached deep into the High Tatras and one of their most important peaks is named after him - Slavkovský štít (2452 m). The written mention of a three-day ascent to this peak in June 1664 was preserved thanks to Juraj Bucholtz in a description from 1718. Once a predominantly German village - Grosschlagendorf - Veľký Slavkov is now a modern village and its location becomes an ideal starting point for visitors to the High Tatras. It offers tourists accommodation and meals in cozy guesthouses and recreational facilities, but also in private.
The accessibility of the High Tatras is ensured by the Tatra electric railway, passenger and bus transport. The proximity of Poprad, Poprad - Tatry International Airport and the train station guarantees excellent accessibility. Only a short walk from Veľký Slavkov there are also important historical monuments in Poprad - Spišská Sobota, Kežmarok or Levoča. In addition to the beautiful nature of the High Tatras, visitors to Veľký Slavkov can also relax in the Belianske Tatras, the Slovak Paradise and in the nearby Aquacity and in ski and tourist resorts.
