History of the Black Eagle building in brief

From the preserved sources, we know practically everything most important about the history of the Black Eagle building. In the past, the whole complex of buildings extending between the current Main Street and Slovenská Street was named the Black Eagle, the original basis of which was a two-storey burgher house. Written records document that this house with a spacious courtyard was purchased by the town in 1561 from the original owner, Tomáš Cascher, in order to reconstruct it into a representative accommodation and catering facility for wealthy visitors and guests of the town. The inn was also used for gatherings of townspeople on various occasions. In 1602, a stable for 28 horses was added to it, which was very advantageous for passengers passing through the city. Among the numerous guests, we can mention the infamous Russian duke MI Kutuzov, one of the victors over Napoleon, or the equally outstanding general Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov, a commander who has not suffered a single defeat during his extremely active career.

Although Martin Zvolenský drew up plans to build a universal cultural building for theater and dance and balls as early as 1829, the Black Eagle building itself, as we know it today, was built in the back of the inn in the 1840s. as an exhibition building of the city redoubt with a beautiful social hall, but according to other projects. Another, newer face was given to the building after the gradual reconstruction and alterations of the entire Black Eagle complex during the final 30 years of the 19th century, creating the cultural and social center of the city, which housed the city redoubt, theater and luxury hotel with restaurant and cafe. prominent visits to the Saris metropolis. The Széchényi Circle in Prešov was based in the redoubt. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918, the Hungarian inscription Fekete sas was removed from the building and replaced by the Slovak translation Black Eagle.

The history of the Black Eagle building is connected with an event significant not only for Prešov itself, but also for the whole of Slovakia. Leading Slovak national awakeners Ľudovít Štúr and Jozef M. Hurban met here on March 3, 1848, with the citizens of the town and its surroundings to initiate them to join the Slovak side in times important for national determination and statehood. This meeting is also reminded by a memorial plaque placed on the building at the main entrance.

Both the inner and outer front of the Black Eagle building have changed their face for the last time during the reconstruction in the 1950s. At the end of the 1980s, this building became part of the city's ambitious plan to create a joint complex with the historic building of the Jonáš Záborský Theater and the Savoy Hotel, which was to implement the original idea in a modern form. This implementation did not take place. In 2009, a partial reconstruction of the Čierny orol building was carried out, where a new roof, windows and air conditioning were installed inside. In 2018, the project Restoration of the facade of the PKO Čierny orol building began, and in 2019 the renovation of the courtyard in front of PKO Čierny orol should begin according to a study where a multifunctional space for open-air events, promenade concerts, dance halls, weddings, theater performances and the like. After the implementation of these reconstructions, it will be achieved that PKO Čierny orol proudly bears the title of the most representative space in the city of Prešov, which clearly deserves it.
