Wooden temple (Ladomirová)

The Greek Catholic wooden church of St. Michael in the village of Ladomirová is one of the most representative churches of the Eastern Rite on the Slovak side of the Carpathians.

The temple was built in 1742 without the use of a single metal nail on the model of Subcarpathian-Russian lemons and as the only Lemko type has an octagonal dome of the nave. This influence is also reflected in the solution of the disposition and the placement of the bell tower above the part called the "grandmother" - which is a kind of vestibule in which once lived women who did not have the right to enter the temple.

Inside the church you can admire a beautiful Byzantine iconostasis with images of many saints. The authors of the paintings are the monks Filon and Kyprian. The carving and carpentry work is the work of monk Michal and local citizen Nikolai Bojek. The iconostasis together with the altar from the middle of the 18th century belong to the national cultural monuments. It is a five-tiered wooden architecture filled with icons, which are spread over five floors.

The interesting thing about the iconostasis is that the deacon's door between the main nave and the sanctuary is not fitted with wings, but allows a view into the sanctuary. The interior of the church is completed by a baroque joke and other icons, freely distributed along the side walls of the church.

The iconostasis was destroyed twice. The first time he was hit by a missile during World War II and the second time when an ancient linden tree fell on the temple during a severe storm. However, believers repaired the wooden temple in 1958. Another reconstruction of the iconostasis and the imperial door took place in the years 1996 - 2006.

The temple complex in Ladomirova is open to the public. It also includes a cemetery, fenced with a wooden log fence. The temple also includes a wooden bell tower with a pillar structure. Its roof is pyramidal, covered with shingles. Originally there were four bells, one of which was the original one from 1742. At present, there are only three bells in the external bell tower.

In the interior of the church, visitors admire the murals (frescoes) and icons, which are created in accordance with the Byzantine style.

Since June 7, 2008, the wooden temple in Ladomirová, together with 8 other wooden monuments based on exceptional world value, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
