History
Albert Mechtl, a Jesuit, came up with the idea of building a Calvary on a hill above the city. Its foundation stone was laid on May 27, 1694 during a processional ceremony. That year, during another processional ceremony on September 14, they consecrated the central cross of Calvary. In the following years, the individual buildings of Calvary were completed. It was completed in 1725. In the 1930s, the Calvary chapels were still in fairly good condition, but in the 1950s they were deliberately destroyed. Until recently, only the ruin of a single chapel was preserved.

After years of dilapidation of the Stations of the Cross, thanks to a group of activists, the process of comprehensive revitalization of the Calvary began.

During the past three years, unfortunately partly due to covid, the Golgotha was completed, a railing was built in the most exposed places of Calvary Hill and the torso was restored - a remnant of one station of the Way of the Cross, which, according to the decision of the preservationists, had to be returned to its original form. We were able to achieve these results thanks to the financial support of the SPP Foundation, the EPH Foundation and ORLEN Unipetrol Slovakia. At the same time, members of the association's committee, the architects Mr. and Mrs. Hantabalovci, developed a proposal for new Stations of the Cross, which are dimensionally based on the original chapels, but with architectural designs that correspond to the spirit of the present time. All the competent authorities agreed with this proposal, so in July 2022 we were able to proceed with their gradual implementation. At the beginning of 2023, we can state that we have built the foundations and foundation slabs of the new chapels, and we are gradually approaching the casting of the chapel bodies, which will be made of noble concrete. We want to finish the work on the construction of the chapels in 2023, and then the interior decoration of the chapels with mosaics will follow, which will depict the events of the individual Stations of the Cross. We anticipate the tentative completion date of the entire complex by the end of 2024.
