The mountainous nature of the country offers opportunities for hiking, biking, ski mountaineering and skiing. The legend of the origin of Vernár speaks of three brothers who were driven away from their own tribe. Here, too, nature helped. They wandered the countryside looking for the highest peak in the area. It was the King's staff. Here they parted and each went to a different valley. This is how the villages of Šumiac, Telgárt and Vernár were created, which are still similar in their customs and traditions. The valley of the Vernárský brook did not provide fertile soil. The forest wealth attracted people to Vernár. The people who lived here in the past have been creators and bearers of traditions for centuries. Gradual transformations of Slovakia also changed the Vernára valley. Living standards have risen, the way of living, cultural needs and interests of people have changed. Nevertheless, some traditions and customs have remained permanent, but they are undoubtedly adapting to the conditions of modern times.
