Sv. John the Baptist de la Salle was born on April 30, 1651 in Reims into an important noble family. At the age of eleven, Ján received the tonsure - according to the custom of the time - and thus became a cleric. Not even sixteen years old, he became a canon of Reims Cathedral, which was an important and profitable position. In 1669 he became a doctor of philosophy. In 1670 he entered the priestly seminary of St. Sulpicia in Paris. He continued his studies in Reims. He was ordained as a priest on Holy Saturday in 1678. John de la Salle gained enormous merit in the field of schools and education. He is the founder of the folk school; he was the first to make the national language the basis of teaching (instead of the previous Latin), the first to establish an industrial school and also the first to establish an institute for teachers. He made schools accessible to a wide range of people.
