The meaning of the name Joseph: God added, expanded (Heb.)

The patron saint of fathers, carpenters, workers, economists, prosecutors, the dying

Sv. Joseph was the guardian of the Lord Jesus and before the law was his father and husband of the Virgin Mary. We know very little about him, only what is written about him in St. Fonts. He came from a royal family and was a descendant of King David. He was born in Bethlehem, but then later moved to Nazareth, probably for work. He was a poor carpenter. In Nazareth he got engaged to Mary, tradition says that at that time he was already old. When Mary began, it was a secret, so even Joseph did not know about it. Joseph's character appeared there. They did not live together or live together, and he saw that she was expecting a child. Apparently it bothered him; according to the customs of the time, he should have had it stoned. However, he decided that he would rather secretly release her so as not to harm her. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him and encouraged him not to be afraid to take her as his wife, for what was done in her is from God. Joseph obeyed. Another mention of him is when he went to Bethlehem under a government decree, as there was a large census in the Roman Empire, to which Palestine also belonged at the time. There Mary gave birth to her child - Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah. Joseph always acts as the head of the family, as the one who is to take care of his family responsibly. On the fortieth day they went to Jerusalem to offer Jesus in the temple of God. Then they returned to Bethlehem. Apparently they did not want to go to Nazareth because of his infamous reputation. The Gospel also mentions the story of the sages who came to Bethlehem to worship the king. It was about two years after the birth of Jesus. As King Herod then lurked for the life of little Jesus, Joseph went with his family to Egypt. Tradition says that they settled there in one of the Jewish settlements, about northeast of Cairo. When the danger passed, they returned from Egypt, but settled in Nazareth as the cruel rule of Herod's successor Archelaus continued. Next, St. Joseph mentions only once, when twelve-year-old Jesus was lost in the temple. This brief report says that the Holy Family led an orderly life - they went to the temple every year, as the Jewish law preached. In the following years, Jesus learned, alongside Joseph's carpentry craft. More mentions in the Gospel of St. We don't have Joseph. They don't catch a single word of his. We don't even know where or when he died. It must have happened before the public appearance of Jesus.

On respect for St. We do not know Joseph in the first centuries. Until 12-13. century, some orders elected him a patron, he worshiped him e.g. sv. Francis of Assisi, Franciscans, Dominicans, St. Teresa of Avila. His feast, which we celebrate on March 19, is one of the commanded ones (in our country in Slovakia, this feast is dispensed, ie not commanded). Pope Pius XII introduced the feast of St. Jozef Robotník on May 1, which is, however, just an arbitrary memory.
