Zichyi's crypt from the church of St. Ondrej

Tomb of an important, Hungarian, aristocratic family, the Zichy family.

An important, Hungarian, aristocratic Zichy family, whose one branch was located in the manor house in Voderady, have at the church of St. Andrew and his crypt. Precisely because of his aristocratic title and high position in the Kingdom of Hungary, it was then considered inappropriate for members of the family to be buried in a common cemetery with their subjects. Thus, every major aristocratic family had its own family crypt, and the Zichy family did not intend to be left behind. They did not choose their manor house for the location of their tomb, but the already mentioned church of St. Ondrej, whose construction was significantly subsidized. The Zichy family received a classical education, so they decided to build their tomb in the ancient style, imitating the buildings of ancient Rome and Greece. At the beginning of the 19th century, 7 wonders of the ancient world were considered to be the ideal of ancient beauty, and one of them, the mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the tomb of King Mausoll II of Anato. and his wife. The building was also built in the Greek style, so it was decided that the Zichyi tomb in Voderady would be a more modest copy of it. At first glance, we can see that the tomb is carried to the Greek temple and especially with its elegant portico, typical of the Athenian Pantheon. The decorative elements on the outer and inner edges of the portico are also not a random decoration, but imitations of the ornaments of Greek and Roman temples. Attica (Roman, which optically raises the building) under the portico is decorated with the Greek letters Alpha and Omega, which begin and end the Greek alphabet and are thus a symbol of the beginning-birth and end-death. In their middle is the Greek symbol ch-ró, or Christ's monogram, used by early Christians, referring to the Byzantine Empire. The door frame is strikingly reminiscent of the entrance to an Egyptian temple. The interest in antiquity and Ancient Egypt arose in Europe as early as the middle of the 18th century, in response to the discovery expeditions that pop populated to explore these ancient monuments. At the top of the entrance portal, however, is not a statue of any pagan deity, but a Christian cross, because the Zichyi were passionate Catholics.
