The city of Prešov is an important economic and administrative center of eastern Slovakia. Already in the past, historically since the granting of city rights, it focused on management activities, which initially had an impact only on the surrounding towns and villages, later on the entire region. This is due to its geographical location, as it is built at the crossroads of former major trade routes.

The administrative city of Prešov consists of four cadastral areas: Prešov, Solivar, Šalgovík and Nižná Šebastová.

Significant international road and railway lines lead through the city to Poland and Ukraine. The nearest cities are (according to the air distance in km): Košice (38), Uzhhorod (96), Miskolc (115), Tarnow (128), Budapest (250), Bratislava (345).

The historic core of the city is a national cultural monument.

The town lies in the Košice basin and is surrounded by the Slánske vrchy and Šarišská vrchovina mountains. The rivers Torysa and Sekčov flow through Prešov.

Geographically, Prešov is located exactly on the 49th parallel, specifically on the coordinates of 49 ° north latitude and 21 ° 15 'east longitude. The altitude of the historic city center is approximately 255 meters above sea level
