FROM THE HISTORY OF CARRIAGES The history begins to be written just when man invented the wheel as the main element in the production of first ordinary cars and later luxury richly decorated carriages. The first passenger and freight cars appeared in ancient Egypt, but even earlier in Asia. With their shape and comfort, they were far from comparable to the carriages of the 19th century, when carriage production reached its peak. Old sources say that the name of the carriage is derived from the village of Kocs near Rab in Hungary.
The first carriages had a body mounted directly on the chassis, but this method was very inconvenient for passengers. It was not until the discovery of leaf lips in the shape of the letter "S" and later "C" in the 16th century that he helped the development of carriages. Different types of carriages and sleighs are created. During the Baroque and Rococo periods in the 17th and 18th centuries, large bodies decorated with rich carvings, gilding and painting were extended. The carriages were beautiful, but with the gradual development they became uncomfortable for more and more populated cities. They were too cumbersome due to their size and it was not easy to drive around the cities. The development in this period also brings with it an improvement in the condition of the roads at that time, the gradual development of travel and therefore the large robust bodies on the roads are gradually replacing lighter carriages.
A real revolution in the development of carriages was the invention of the English carriage manufacturer Obadiah Elliot, who in 1804 built elliptical leaf springs. These springs were attached directly to the carriage body, which improved stability and, in particular, increased speed. At this time, there is a boom in postal services and thus the demand for new types of carriages, new factories for their production are beginning to emerge. In 1902, there were 386 carriage factories in Austria-Hungary. The most famous are Schustala and co. in Kopřivnice, Marshall in Pressburg, V. Brozik and Son in Pilsen, Jacob Lohner in Vienna and others. The beginning of the 20th century becomes the beginning of the end of carriage production. Gradually, the production of cars begins, which, however, are very similar in shape to carriages. They are actually carriages with a motor without horses. Probably the most famous is the first car made in Kopřivnice - Präsident. Carriages were produced until 1945, although in very small quantities.
